A short while ago a friend and I met for dinner at this buffet(!) restaurant in midtown called IchiUmi. Can you imagine all you can eat sushi, sashimi, crab legs, oysters, shrimp cocktail and DESSERT in Manhattan? It's not cheap, nor is it overpriced, and this was our second visit.
My friend had placed a pancake-like pastry on her plate, and while we were shoveling, er, delicately tasting the last course, I pointed to her pancake and said "I want to know how that is."
She was silent, then looked sad. "What?" I said.
"I thought you said, 'I want to hug Alice.'"
I-want-to-know-how-that-is. I-want-to-hug-Alice. I totally hear it.
I was touched by how tuned-in my friend was with me, and how true her statement was. It was an intimate exchange.
Feeling morose for the moment, I got up and took another dessert from the smorgasbord.

I think Alice would want you to have the dessert. I still think about Alice all the time too, and I did not even know her, and I marvel at the thought, love and strength you have put into understanding what her life on earth was to you and to everyone.
