Hi Haig,

I was reading an old Whitney High School Alumni News Letter and came across the section mentioning Alice's accident and link to your (her) blog. I am very sorry for your and your family's loss. The blog is very moving.

(I don't know anything about blog etiquette, so I hope it is OK to share my fondest memory of Alice with you in this response.) I'm sure I used to tease you and Alice in High School because you were Sophie's little brother and sister, but the twenty plus years since graduating from Whitney have now blurred those memories. No, the fondest memory that I have of Alice is not from high school. It is actually of a chance meeting during our college years. I was with a former girlfriend one late afternoon at the TOPS Restaurant on Colorado Blvd in Pasadena, when another girl walked up to me and said, "Hi Ryan." At first, she really flustered me, because I hadn't seen Alice in several years, and she had changed since high school. Once she told me who she was, we had a good chuckle and started talking about the high school days, Sophie, you, my brother Cory, and all the other people we knew, and then college, my fraternity, and her soccer. All the while, I was ignoring my girlfriend and Alice was ignoring her friends. The shy girl that I had known Alice to be at Whitney was transformed into a lively, energetic and engaging young woman.

I don't know why this memory is such a powerful one, but it is etched in my mind some 15 or so years later. And it is a happy memory.

I hope that you and your family are doing well and I wish you all a happy new year. Say hello to Sophie and your mom for me.

Sincerely,
Ryan Nagao

Thanks for the memory, Ryan -- it's a keeper, and it brings a smile to my face. Alice was a hot number, and a flirt. I appreciate that you wrote in to share how Alice remains with you.
