Tasting memories

Peter, my mom, L and I were at a neighbor's for dinner tonight. While I was sitting on the couch, L was rummaging through the candy bowl next to me. Yes, our neighbor is 85 years old.
She took out the strawberry candies, then two bite-sized Snickers to uncover two Creamsavers. You know the ones -- hard lifesaver candies swirled with "creme." They're really tasty, and Alice loved them before I ever tried one. Even though it was before dinner, actually right before dinner, I unwrapped one and put it in my mouth. It didn't go very well with the cosmo(!) I was drinking, but...
It was so smooth, flavorful and not too sweet. It's a way I can feel closer to Alice, even just for the duration of the sugar dissolving in my mouth, and I'm grateful.
I remember her telling me about them around 5 years ago, all excited, by my mom's candy bowl in the family room. All animated, with no irony whatsover. Alice could appreciate some of the simpler things, which I'm learning to do myself. With her help.
